30 MAY CURRENT AFFAIRS 2020:

1. Myanmar will receive $ 700 million IMF loan for COVID-19 spending


  • Myanmar's parliament has approved a $ 700 million loan from the IMF to spend on fighting COVID-19 in the country.
  • Myanmar is seeking a loan from the IMF under its Rapid Credit Facility (RCF) and the Rapid Financing Instrument (RFI), which offers low-income countries an instant credit facility at a discounted rate.
  • This debt is used to offset the deficit made by the government by spending too much on social security, health services and financial aid in the wake of the corona epidemic.
  • Myanmar has decided to allocate 10 per cent of its current budget to fight COVID-19.


2. 22nd Financial Stability and Development Council meeting chaired by Minister of Finance


  • On May 28, 2020, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman chaired a meeting of the Financial Stability and Development Board.
  • The meeting reviewed the current domestic and global financial situation, financial vulnerabilities, liquidity of micro-financial institutions, non-bank finance corporations, regulatory responses, etc.
  • The Board of Economic Stability and Development is the highest organization created by Goi.
  • The council was set up in 2010 by then Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee.
  • The Council deals with issues such as economic sector development, financial stability, inter-regulatory coordination, financial inclusion, financial literacy.


3.May 29: International Day of the UN Peacekeepers


  • Each year, the United Nations celebrates the International Day of the UN Peacekeepers on May 29. This year the day is celebrated under the theme of Women Peace: The Key of Peace.
  • The International Day of the UN Peacekeepers is celebrated to honor more than 3,900 peacekeepers who lost their lives serving under the United Nations.
  • The first UN peacekeeping mission was established on May 29, 1948. A peacekeeping mission was set up to oversee the ceasefire agreement signed between Israel and the Arab.


4. Karnataka government will launch its Kind State Health Register


  • The Karnataka State Government has announced that it will launch a "State Health Registration" to collect data on all its citizens.
  • The register is the first of its kind in the country.
  • The register contains the names of all citizens of the state.
  • COVID-19 has raised the need to maintain such a register.
  • The project will be launched from Chikballapur district of Karnataka.
  • The survey will be conducted by Asha workers, education department staff, primary health center staff and revenue officials.


5.New freshwater fish "Punicatus Sanctus" has been found


  • A new freshwater fish, Punitus sanctus, has been found in Velankanni, Tamil Nadu. The fish was found in a small body of water.
  • Sanctus means 'holy' in Latin. Punitus is a species of fish, commonly found in the Western and Eastern Ghats and in the Eastern Himalayas.
  • The Punitus clan is locally known as Kende in Kerala and Paral in Kerala.
  • Punitus belongs to the family of Cyprinidae.
  • Ciprinde is a family of fresh water fishes. They are collectively called Cyprinids.
  • The family includes barbs, goldfish, bitter and corps.


6.WHO suspended hydroxychloroquine experiments

  • The World Health Organization recently discontinued experiments on the efficacy of a drug called hydroxychloroquine for the treatment of COVID-19. The HCQ experiment is one of four mega experiments launched by the agency.
  • The four mega trials include HCQ, Lopinavir and Ritonavir, Lopinavir and Ritonavir with Interferon and Remdecivir.
  • Drugs in India are mainly recommended for asymptomatic health workers. It cannot be used to treat COVID-19 patients.
