It is a desi version of the internationally notorious Pirate Bay from where one can download mostly South Indian movies and other content for free via a torrent client. Various popular Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and other language films are routinely uploaded on the site. Tamilrockers.com is a torrent website which provides illegal download and streaming of content such as Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Bollywood movies and TV shows. The notorious creators of the website have been known to release movies from several genres and regions within days after the movie is released in theatres.
The website is said to be inspired by internationally recognised Pirate Bay, from where people could download any movie, be it Hollywood, Bollywood, or regional.
The company is said to be founded in 2011 by three men, who were later arrested in 2018. Though the website was founded in India, sources say that the website had contributors from across the globe. The movies on the site are uploaded by the contributors after the movie print is recorded from any local theatre.
According to a survey, more than 18 percent of the population in India is known to stream content online illegally through piracy websites, which proved to become a huge market for Tamil Rockers. After it became a word of terror for producers and regional filmmakers across the country, the Government of India has blocked access to this website. The website continues to operate even after being banned by switching to a series of new web addresses.
A few of the movies that were leaked online by Tamil Rockers days after their release were Super 30, Article 15, Uri: The Surgical Strike, Kabir Singh, and the highest-grossing film of 2019, Avengers: Endgame.

With the growing popularity of TV shows and web series on television channels and online streaming platforms, even these are now available for illegal download on Tamilrockers in 2021.
Tamilrockers in India :
Since piracy is illegal in India, the Indian government has banned Tamilrockers but the website remains online as it routinely changes its domain name extension and can also be accessed via proxy sites which lead users to the website. In March 2018, three people linked to Tamilrockers were arrested. Further, in May 2019, more Tamilrockers members were arrested in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.

As per reports, the entertainment industry loses roughly $2.8 billion annually to illegal downloads. Indian internet users reportedly contribute to be the second-largest group to use illegal torrent websites globally.

What is the government doing to stop piracy?
The Government has taken definitive steps to eradicate piracy of films. As per the Cinematograph Act approved in 2019, any individual found recording a movie without the written consent of the producers can face a jail term up to 3 years. Besides this, a fine of ₹10 lakhs can also be imposed on the culprits. People circulating pirated copies on illegal torrent websites can also face a jail term.
